ANDANTE : Multiangled Soundwalking in Porto
Summer School in Sound and Music Computing & SID Training School on Interactions with Environmental Sounds
Casa Da Música , Porto, Portugal
July 18-21, 2009
By Niels Böttche, Reinhard Gupfinger, Vanessa de Michelis and Pablo Sanz Almoguera.
With the help and support of Stephan Baumann (DKFI) and Bram de Jong (Freesound Project).

Four dimensions of the soundscape of Porto were registered along three chosen routes within the city.
The audible range was recorded in binaural stereo together with ultrasonic frequencies, electromagnetic emissions, underwater sound and solid vibrations.
The gps coordinates of the walks were traced into a map which can be navigated with a Wii controller. It allows to change between the four sound layers, jump between the routes, move backward and forward and change the speed of the journey.
Den Haag Onderwater is a field recording exploratory project started in April 09 and currently in progress. I brought a poster about it to the SMC09 Summer School, held just before the 6th Sound and Music Computing Music Conference at Casa da Música, in Porto, Portugal.

Den Haag Onderwater is an interdisciplinary project of urban exploration of The Hague, concentrating in the examination of its acoustic space. In an attempt to listen to this environment from an alternative perspective, it is focused on subaqueous field recordings realized in the waterways of the city.
Sounds from invisible sources and uncertain origin are blended with echoes and resonances from the everyday urban activity and sounds from the species that populate this habitat. We discover a subtle soundscape full of detail and minimal occurrences which invites to an attentive listening, unveiling its delicate richness.

I am curating the next edition of the festival Sensxperiment, held in Lucena and Córdoba, Spain. It will happen in collaboration with Mediateletipos, constituting a new experiment and a challenge for us too. The very first public communication was already spread a few days ago and we continue now working on it.

After ten years of life, Sensxperiment opens a new stage in which it will run on a triennial basis. The aim of the festival will be examining and spreading a series of artistic practices which have in common the creation of experiences, focusing in the idea of sensory immersion. Light, sound, time, space and perception are the main elements of the works that it will gather and bring closer to the public.
With this new approach, Sensxperiment is proposed as an experiment in investigation and diffusion which will count on the collaboration of the online publication mediateletipos.net, part of the cluster ArteSonoro.org, which will serve as a platform for communication and publishing. During the first phase of the festival (2009-2010), will be activated a process of approaching to a selection of artists and projects related to the subject, with the aim of establishing a dialogue with them, compiling preexistent documentation and generating new materials about these works. The results will be showed in a dynamic form through mediateletipos.net In addition, several lectures and actions will take place in 2009-2010. This edition will reach its climax in 2011 with a series of events in several locations and the launch of a DVD-publication documenting the project.

Arrived in Portugal in order to participate in the SMC09 Summer School, part of the 6th Sound and Music Computing Conference, which this year is held in Casa da Música, Porto. The theme of this summer school is Interacting with Sounds of Porto. It will explore the potential of recording, processing, sharing and interacting with city sounds.
I have been already for a few days discovering Porto and doing soundwalks in the city. This weekend starts the school, on which I will participate in the project UrbanSync by Dr. Stephan Baumann and will continue with my soundwalking project, hopefully integrating both. I am also presenting a research poster about my work-in-progress Den Haag Onderwater, a project from which some fragments appeared on this site but which I didn´t have time to introduce properly yet (I guess I will do it in the coming weeks).
It promises to be an intense experience, with interesting people to meet and work with and only four days packed of information and things to do. Following the school I will continue for a few days more the sonic exploration of the surroundings of Porto, more relaxedly and in company of friends.

I will be closing the evening with a quadraphonic set of half an hour and in very good company, with a few friends also performing there.
Below there is a little piece of info about the project, extended info and more stuff will be posted here soon.

WONDERWERP is an initiative to gather musicians and audiences interested in and involved with all types of contemporary music. With a monthly edition, we hope to contribute somehow to the creation of a live contemporary music scene in Den Haag. Organized and produced by Yolanda Uriz and Angel Faraldo.
On 19th Feb 2009 I gave a talk with the title ‘Immersive Experiences’ as my final work for the course Synesthetics II, lectured by Frans Evers and part of the Interfaculty ArtScience study program at the Royal Academy of Art in Den Haag (Netherlands).
Based in a personal approach to the topic rather than intending to be comprehensive, my presentation was focused in a few general ideas illustrated with a selection of contemporary artworks regarded as remarkable examples. Below is the slideshow used in the presentation.
