Aired on framework radio #336, July 2011

Aeolian Transmission is based on the exploration of the action of wind. Since my arrival to The Netherlands and the discovery of its weather conditions, I started to pay more attention to the interactions of wind in the urban environment, including all sorts of architectural elements, objects and materials. Actually, wind itself seems to be a tricky phenomena to be captured using regular microphones, whose principle is usually based in a diaphragm which moves accordingly to air pressure variations, something which might easily result in distortion when wind blows on them. Therefore, I approached this force in a non-direct way as well, tapping into it as it flows through other mediums such as water and solids, attempting to reveal what cannot be heard with our bare ears.

It intends to promote awareness to the sonic environment, engaging the kids into field recording, sound mapping and composition with the collected sounds, using a mixer which is integrated in their online map.

I was invited to compose a one minute sound sphere using the same tools for their artists section, which is meant to work as example and inspiration for the students. It contains also sound spheres by Cilia Erens, Zeno van den Broek and Danny de Graan.

Departing from recordings made on location, it follows a walk through different places and moments over the course of a fictitious time. The surrounding environment, our work space, moments of meditation, personal and collaborative explorations are all present in this interpretation of the days spent at the retreat.

An interplay between the occurrences and traces found in the recorded material with my own memories and the impressions, images, sounds, perceptions or meanings that might be conjured in the imagination of the listener.

Sounds recorded in Camallera, Girona (ES) July 6-10, 2010.
Edited and composed in Barcelona, Madrid and The Hague, Aug-Dec 2010.

July 18-21, 2009 – Casa Da Música , Porto, Portugal

Four dimensions of the audible and hidden soundscapes of Porto are captured along three chosen routes within the city (Riverside, the historic city centre and a trip in metro). These layers consist of binaural sound, ultrasonic, electromagnetic range and underwater/surface recordings.

The gps coordinates of the walks are traced into a sound map which can be navigated with a Wii controller. The interface allows to smoothly switch between the four sound layers, jump between the routes, move backward and forward or change the speed of the journey.
